In Loving Memory of Dr Tsitsi Nyamupingidza

Bridging Science, Research and Practice in Organic Agriculture

The organic agriculture sector in Zimbabwe has lost a valued colleague and advocate in the passing of Dr Tsitsi Nyamupingidza, whose contribution reflected a deep appreciation of the relationship between science, agricultural practice and farmers’ realities.

As a member of the Board of Trustees of the Zimbabwe Organic Producers and Promoters Association (ZOPPA), Dr Nyamupingidza brought scientific knowledge and practical experience to discussions on the advancement of organic agriculture. She recognised the strategic importance of science and research in strengthening the sector, while emphasising that these must remain relevant and responsive to farmers’ needs.

Her experience working with farmers informed her contributions to stakeholder discussions, where she championed the connection between scientific evidence and practical application. She understood that research can support soil health, ecological pest and disease management, and sustainable production, but that its true value lies in translating knowledge into accessible solutions that address the everyday challenges faced by farmers.

Dr Nyamupingidza’s contribution helped reinforce an important principle for the organic movement: science must inform practice, research must respond to farmers’ realities, and farmers’ knowledge and experience must help shape innovation. This connection is essential to building an organic sector that is scientifically sound, ecologically sustainable and responsive to the livelihoods of those who practise it.

Through her role as a Trustee, she contributed to the strategic conversations shaping organic agriculture in Zimbabwe, advocating for meaningful engagement between researchers, farmers and other stakeholders. Her perspective remains a valuable reminder that advancing organic agriculture requires not only scientific innovation, but also collaboration, practical relevance and recognition of farmers as central partners in the process.

Her passing is a loss to the ZOPPA community and the wider organic agriculture movement. May her contribution continue to inspire efforts to bridge science and practice in building a more sustainable agricultural future for Zimbabwe.

May her soul rest in peace.
